Abstract
The present research aims to achieve a deeper insight into the role that meta-dehumanization and meta-hate can exert on intergroup relations within the context of Muslims and non- Muslims in the United Kingdom. The study consists of an experiment in which participants (N = 382) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions. Depending on the condition, the participants were exposed to an article stating Muslims either dehumanize, hate or dislike (i.e. prejudice) non-Muslims. Measurements of dehumanization, hate, support for aggressive actions and willingness for contact were obtained to gain insight into the intergroup relation between Muslims and non-Muslims. After performing an ANOVA, results showed that meta- dehumanization (vs. meta-prejudice), leads to significantly increased levels of dehumanization, hate and support for aggressive actions, while willingness for intergroup contact decreased. Additionally, significant results were found in the meta-hate condition (vs. meta-prejudice) showing increased levels of dehumanization and hate, while willingness for contact decreased.
