Abstract

This study examines the mediating role of belongingness in the relationship between mentor immediacy and student motivation. Mentor immediacy, characterized by verbal and nonverbal behaviors such as maintaining eye contact, providing positive feedback, and demonstrating empathy, reduces the psychological distance between mentors and students. While prior research has shown that immediacy positively influences student engagement, satisfaction, and academic outcomes, the underlying psychological mechanisms remain unclear. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study hypothesizes that immediacy fosters a sense of belonging, a fundamental psychological need, which subsequently enhances both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. For this cross-sectional study, 179 first-year psychology students from the University of Groningen completed validated questionnaires. The collected data provided valuable insights into the relationships between immediacy, belongingness, and student motivation within mentor-student interactions in higher education. A linear regression analysis and a mediation analysis were conducted on the obtained data. Results revealed that belongingness fully mediates the relationship between immediacy and motivation, underscoring the essential role of belongingness in educational settings. Students who perceived high levels of mentor immediacy reported feeling more connected and valued, which in turn increased their motivation to participate in academic tasks. These findings highlight the importance of immediacy behaviors in fostering supportive and inclusive learning environments. Practical strategies for mentors include using open communication, providing regular feedback, and demonstrating genuine interest in students' well-being, ultimately promoting engagement and academic success. Keywords: belongingness, immediacy, motivation, mentor-student interactions
