Abstract
Previous research has found that physical activity is positively related to well-being, also among children. However, different factors can form disparities for participation in physical activity. Ethnic background and disabilities appear to be factors contributing to such differences. In this current research a difference on the role of disability and ethnic background on the impact of physical activity and well-being among children is assumed. Against expectations, no significant relationship was found between physical activity and well-being. Disability and ethnic background also did not significantly play a role in this relationship. These unexpected findings may be explained by methodological constraints, such as a relatively small sample size and the use of a self-reported physical activity scale among children, who are likely to overpredict themselves. A significant finding, however, was that children from ethnic minorities (n = 35) engaged in less physical activity compared to ethnic majorities (n = 67). This finding highlights the need for targeted strategies to encourage physical activity in underrepresented groups such as ethnic minorities. Future research should make use of larger, more representative samples and of objective measures of physical activity. These efforts will provide a clearer understanding of how to optimize the well-being benefits of physical activity for all children.
