Abstract

Parents of autistic children face unique challenges when raising their children, which can significantly impact their resilience. This study explores some risk and protective factors influencing the resilience of parents of autistic children in Indonesia. While previous research has largely focused on parents in developed countries, this study aimed to address the gap by examining a population in a developing country, specifically Indonesia. A questionnaire-based method was employed, utilizing the WFRQ and the Brief COPE, administered to 201 parents of autistic children in Indonesia. Findings showed that socio-economic factors, including income level, educational attainment, and the presence or absence of house help, were non-significant predictors of resilience in this sample. On the other hand, coping strategies such as active coping, seeking emotional support, and practicing and finding comfort in religion emerged as significant protective factors. While these findings are noteworthy, the generalizability of the sample was limited, which may affect the broader applicability of these results. Nonetheless, these outcomes highlight the importance of cultural and contextual influences on resilience, as some differences were observed compared to findings from developed countries. This underscores the necessity of further cross-cultural research to better understand the role of these factors in different settings. Insights from this study can inform the development of culturally appropriate interventions and support systems to enhance the resilience of parents raising autistic children in developing countries, particularly in Indonesia.
