Abstract

This study examined protective and risk factors influencing resilience in a sample of 205 parents of autistic children and 200 parents of neurotypical children. We investigated the relationships between resilience and religion, income, number of siblings, acceptance, self-blame, and other-blame. Using a cross-sectional design, we assessed resilience and related factors with validated measures, including the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ), the Brief COPE, and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ-short). Results showed no significant overall difference in resilience levels between the two groups. However, correlational analyses of individual factors revealed varying relationships with resilience. Acceptance and religiosity showed significant positive correlations with resilience in both groups, emphasizing their roles as protective factors within Indonesia’s collectivist culture. In the neurotypical group, blaming others significantly negatively correlated with resilience. Self-blame, income, and the number of siblings were not significantly correlated with resilience, underscoring the need to account for cultural and contextual influences in future research. These findings highlight the importance of culturally informed interventions that incorporate religious and cognitive emotion strategies to enhance parental resilience.
