Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting both the person and its environment. Especially parents of children with ASD suffer more stress and poorer quality of life compared to parents of neurotypical children and need effective coping strategies. Family resilience conceptualizes the family’s ability to rebound from adversity experienced and this study aims to examine and identify risk and protective factors associated with family resilience in parents of children with ASD. This cross-sectional study involved 213 parents of children with ASD and 105 parents of neurotypical children residing in Indonesia. Data of sociodemographic characteristics, family resilience, coping mechanisms and cognitive emotional regulation were collected. Results showed that family resilience of parents of children with ASD did not significantly differ between parents of neurotypical children. Positive coping, social support and religiosity were associated with family resilience in parents of children with ASD. Additionally, planning, religiosity, rumination, active coping and self-blame were identified as protective factors, while behavioral disengagement and distraction were identified as risk factors accounting for differences between high and low family resilience in parents of children with ASD. The study underscores the importance social support plays in fostering resilience. The insights of coping mechanisms and cognitive emotional regulation on high and low resilience provide foundations, future research and practical interventions can connect on. Keywords: autism spectrum disorder, family resilience, coping mechanisms, cognitive emotional regulation, risk and protective factors, Indonesia
