Abstract

This study first seeks to investigate if the non-fulfillment of relational promises of algorithmic-managers increase employee feelings of violation compared to non-fulfillment of transactional promises, and secondly whether the algorithmic-manager’s anthropomorphism acts as a moderator of this relationship. We used vignettes to run our experiment. Our experiment (N = 258 employees; Mage = 36.6, SD = 11.1) is a 2 (type of non fulfilled promises: relational versus transactional) × 2 (algorithmic manager’s anthropomorphism: high versus low) between-subjects design. Despite insignificant results for both of the hypotheses, this study contributes to the research gap on human-robot interaction in the workplace evaluating how to get optimal performance and cooperation between employees and robots in the context of algorithmic management. This study suggests different future directions and improvements for potential future replication, offering valuable insights into how promise fulfillment and anthropomorphism may impact employee-robot dynamics in algorithmic management contexts.
