Abstract
People with psychotic disorders experience disturbances in thinking, behaviour and emotional responsiveness. Additionally, they often experience cognitive impairments and reduced financial capability, which are linked to challenges in independent living. People with psychotic disorders are more likely to encounter debt and homelessness due to their limited financial skills. In this thesis, the differences in financial capability between individuals with (N= 25) and without (N= 41) psychotic disorders were examined through different analyses. The results confirmed the first hypothesis that people with psychotic disorders have significantly lower financial capability than people without psychotic disorders. Cognitive functioning in relation to financial capability was also explored in both groups by analysing cognitive tests from the BACS. Although it was hypothesized that cognitive impairments would play a mediating role in financial capability, this was not supported. Alternative explanations for these findings include the importance of contextual factors or the presence of symptoms in people with psychotic disorders. The findings of this study emphasize the need for interventions that help individuals with psychotic disorders manage their finances more effectively or access the support required to carry out financial tasks. Further research on the role of cognition and contextual factors in relation to financial capability among people with psychotic disorders is recommended. Keywords: psychotic disorders, financial capability, cognitive functioning, mediation
