Abstract
Climate change presents one of the most urgent and difficult challenges of modern times, requiring mobilisation at every level of society to mitigate it. Organisations play an important role in this through strategies and policies aimed at increasing its overall sustainability, yet the success of any organisation’s initiatives often depends on its employees. The present research explores the interplay between employees’ biospheric values (BV) and perceived organisational support (POS) and their joint role in fostering environmental organisational citizenship behaviour (OCBE). We predict that an employee’s strong BV are positively related to OCBE, consistent with Schwartz’s theory of basic human values. We further predict that the relationship between BV and OCBE is moderated by POS, such that the strength of the relationship between BV and OCBE depends on POS. To test this, we used a cross-sectional survey using a convenience sample. Results showed no support for the hypothesised relationship between BV and OCBE but do however show a strong positive relationship between BV and OCBE, under high POS, such that the association between BV and OCBE is stronger, when POS is higher. This undergirds the idea that POS may partially bridge the value-action gap. Findings highlight the critical role of contextual factors in the manifestation of personal values in the workplace.
