Abstract

Environmental degradation is a serious global challenge that necessitates urgent and collaborative sustainable action. Personal norms are associated with engaging in sustainable behaviors, though the extent to which age moderates this association remains unclear. The present study investigates whether age influences the relationship between personal norms and advocating for sustainability to friends, family, and colleagues. Two hypotheses were tested: (1) individuals with stronger personal norms are more likely to advocate for sustainability, and (2) this association is stronger among older individuals. A cross-sectional survey was conducted, participants (n = 213) were recruited through convenience sampling, and statistical analyses were performed using SPSS. The findings showed that personal norms were associated with advocating for sustainability, however, this association did not vary across ages. These findings suggest that fostering personal norms regarding sustainability is essential to advocating for sustainability regardless of age. The study’s implications highlight that interventions and campaigns aimed at encouraging advocacy for sustainability should focus on strengthening personal norms rather than tailoring strategies based on age. Limitations, such as a homogeneous sample and correlational research, are acknowledged, and future research directions are discussed. Ultimately, this study provides nuanced insights that can inform both academic discourse and practical sustainability initiatives. Keywords: age, personal norms, advocating sustainability, sustainability, social influence
