Abstract
Sport has historically been known as an environment that fosters hegemonic masculinity. Our study explores how traditional masculinity and progressive masculinity, alongside gender, impact perceptions about sport competence in rugby and boxing. In particular, we examined whether traditional masculinity is perceived as more competent in both rugby and boxing (H1) and if men would perceive larger differences compared to women (H2). Moreover, we hypothesized that there will be larger discrepancies in competence of traditional and progressive masculinity in rugby as a team sport (H3). Using Qualtrics, we implemented a 2x2 between-subjects design and obtained responses from 419 individuals from the UK. We discovered that traditional masculinity is perceived as more competent and that the discrepancy is larger in rugby. Nevertheless, there was no significant effect of gender. This thesis discusses how our findings contribute to the understanding of masculinities in the sporting environment and the implications our research has for both sport organizations and society in general. Keywords: traditional masculinity, progressive masculinity, sport competence, maletyped sports, rugby, boxing
