Abstract
Employees commonly experience workplace frustration. Work stressors are constantly evolving and employees need to develop a coping repetroire. Control theory informs us that frustration is a feasible result of a discrepeancy between a desired and current state. This negative emotion can motivate learning behavior. We hypothesized that in comparison to the control group, frustration increases in the self-reflection group because an initial awareness of work stressors is overwhelming. Additionally, the exploration group decreases in frustration because goal progression reduces this discrepancy. Our sample consisted of 65 employees above the age of 18 years, currently working more than 20hrs a week. They were randomly assigned to the control group (n = 23), the self-reflection group (n = 20), and the learning group (n = 22). After a baseline questionnaire, they received two daily questionnaires in which prompts to engage with the daily interventions were introduced. Daily frustration scores were collected in the after-work questionnaire over 10 working days. We conducted a RM-ANOVA and found that the interaction effect between group membership and time was not statistically significant (F (2,62) = 2.19, p = 0.12, η_(ρ^2 ) = 0.06). To further explore patterns at week 2, we performed a multiple comparison. No pair was significant, but the greatest difference, 0.61 (p = 0.08), was between the control group and the self-reflection group. We observed poor engagement with the interventions perhaps due to the effort and time required to learn. We recommend a focus on compliance, and longer experimentation time in order to observe the effects of exploring and self-reflecting.
