Abstract
The study at hand focused on identifying social psychological factors which influence the acceptability rating of an eco-village given by the residents of their neighborhood. The purpose of this was to help amplify the potential influence of such communities in combating global warming, especially by accelerating energy transition. The data for this study, was gathered collaboratively with other students from the university of Groningen using a field- based correlational design. The final sample consisted of 165 participants after exclusion, which got recruited using a door-to-door approach. These participants were sampled from the Oosterparkwijk neighborhood, which is surrounding the Paradijsvogeltuin eco-village in Groningen, the Netherlands. In line with the first two hypotheses perceived biospheric value similarity and perceived shared identity were both found to be significantly, and positively correlated with acceptability ratings of the inhabitants of this eco-village. However, contrary to prior expectations, the hypothesized interaction effect in which perceived biospheric value similarity was expected to moderate the correlation between perceived shared identity and acceptability was not significant. These findings suggest that presenting an eco-village in terms of an overarching shared local identity and emphasizing perceived biospheric value similarities with the people living around them, may both increase the acceptability of this community. Keywords: acceptability, eco-village, energy transition, perceived biospheric value similarity, perceived shared identity
