Abstract

Pro-environmental behavior or PEB is an effective way in which the average person can contribute to helping the environment. Because of the ongoing climate crisis, it would be good to stimulate this as much as possible. In this study we wanted to replicate a previous study that found cognitively supported values increase congruent behavior with that value. Participants had to either cognitively support biospheric values (experimental condition), or they would rate their feelings towards biospheric values (control condition). PEB was then assessed by how much time they would volunteer for a litter-picking event. Climate anxiety was tested as well as a moderating variable. The results did not show a significant increase in PEB for people that cognitively supported values. The interaction between climate anxiety and cognitive support on PEB was also not significant. Future research is needed with a larger more diverse sample and more accurate replication.
