Abstract

Emerging evidence suggests that university students with ADHD symptomatology have difficulties with the satisfaction and frustration of their basic psychological needs (BPNs): autonomy, competence, and relatedness. This study, based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), explored the link between self-reported ADHD symptoms and BPNs satisfaction and frustration. Additionally, we explored whether these associations differ by biological sex and how internalizing symptoms (IS) might influence them, as previous research highlighted potential gender differences in ADHD symptomatology and the comorbidity of ADHD symptoms with IS. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 85 first-year psychology students (ages 17–29, M=19.2, SD=1.7) at the University of Groningen. Participants completed six questionnaires assessing ADHD symptoms, BPNs satisfaction and frustration, and IS. The sample was 80% female (n = 68) and 20% male (n = 17), with non-binary individuals excluded to focus on gender differences in ADHD symptoms. Results suggest that students with higher ADHD symptoms experience greater competence, autonomy, and relatedness frustration, as well as more internalizing symptoms (IS), though need satisfaction was unaffected. Female students reported greater autonomy satisfaction than male students, while IS significantly predicted competence and relatedness frustration. Gender differences in competence and relatedness frustration persisted even after accounting for IS. ADHD symptoms did not significantly predict BPNs outcomes when controlling for IS. Future research should use longitudinal or experimental designs to clarify the causal relationship between ADHD symptoms and BPNs.
