Abstract

Progressive masculinity is associated with greater support of gender equality and greater father involvement, compared to traditional masculinity. However, little is known about the societal perception of these traits in progressively masculine men. This study investigates how society perceives the adoption of progressively masculine traits in the context of positive fatherhood and gender equality. We hypothesize that positive fatherhood mediates the relationship between progressive masculinity and gender equality. We conducted a vignette study (N = 419), where we manipulated masculinity types (progressive masculinity vs traditional masculinity) and assessed perception of gender equality and positive fatherhood. The results of the study showed that progressive masculinity is perceived as more gender egalitarian and as more positive in regards to fatherhood. Additionally, the relationship between progressive masculinity and gender equality is mediated by positive fatherhood. We conclude that progressively masculine men are perceived as advocating for gender equality, due to their fatherly involvement. This study has both theoretical—the relationship dynamics between the variables—and practical implications with legislative and political aspects
