Abstract

Individuals with a high level of ADHD symptoms encounter a multitude of struggles additional to the ones others encounter, these struggles can have a large impact on their motivation and well-being. Research shows that individuals with a high level of ADHD symptoms encounter problems within their social life, family affairs, otherwise personal life, and their work or studies. Particularly the struggles encountered during studies can have a huge impact on the remainder of one’s life. In the present study different aspects of the relationship between college students with ADHD and their well-being and motivation are investigated. First off, the difference in motivation and well-being between individuals with above-median vs below-median ADHD symptom scores will be tested. Secondly, the difference in motivation and well-being between biological males and biological females will be assessed. Lastly, the relationship between independent variables internalizing symptoms, biological sex and ADHD symptoms and dependent variable motivation and well-being will be looked into. The analysis of these relationships will be done using the Basic Psychological Needs theory. The focus will be on whether individuals with a higher level of ADHD symptoms experience an overall lower level of motivation and well-being in comparison to individuals with a lower level of ADHD symptoms. A survey was used (N = 85) to determine individuals’ level of ADHD symptoms, their levels of Basic Psychological Needs, and their level of internalizing symptoms. Results of the survey showed that individuals with higher levels of ADHD symptoms struggles significantly more on four out of six subscales of Basic Psychological Needs, and that the variance of these subscales could significantly be explained by an individual’s level of internalizing symptoms. The conclusion is made that college students with a higher level of ADHD symptoms struggle more with their motivation and well-being in comparison to their counterparts with a lower level of ADHD symptoms.
