Abstract

Background. The diagnostic procedure for autism in Indonesia is heavily influenced by both cultural and financial factors, leading to an unstructured approach that is not aligned with the one proposed by the government. Furthermore, negative emotions of autistic childrens´parents contribute to unhealthy parenting styles, from which autistic children in Indonesia are likely to suffer. Methods. A systematic literature review based on PRISMA guidelines was conducted, using SMARTCat, PubMed, EBSCOHost and Google Scholar as search engines. 28 studies were included after applying predefined eligibility criteria. Results. Financial constraints, geographical disparities, systemic inefficiencies and cultural stigmatization collectively result in delayed and insufficient diagnosis of autism in Indonesia. Additionally, societal stigmatization leads to negative parental emotions and fosters the development of more authoritarian parenting styles, which limit opportunities for healthy psychological development and social integration of autistic children. Conclusions. The translation of culturally-sensitive diagnostic tools and the adoption of telemedicine offer promising solutions to overcoming financial and geographical challenges for autism diagnosis in Indonesia. Furthermore, future research and clinical practice should focus on addressing stigmatization as the root cause of unhealthy parenting styles by making use of public education programs and culturally-sensitive parenting interventions.
