Abstract
Having a child, losing a close relative or suffering a physical injury are examples of significant life events that individuals can go through. Talented sports players also experience life events. Previous studies have found that life events can have significant adverse effects on wellbeing in talented sports players. This study researches the influence of positive and negative life events on the self-efficacy and motivation to perform in talented young football players. Single-item self report questions were used to measure self-efficacy, motivation and life events for youth players of a professional dutch football club. Players were measured daily with an ipad in the locker room right before the start of training sessions and matches. Four Wilcoxon tests were conducted to analyze self-efficacy and motivation scores prior and posterior to the experience of positive and negative life events. Data of 44 players was included, measuring 159 life events. No significant results were found. The hypothesis that positive life events would have no effect on self-efficacy and motivation is therefore supported. The results do not support the hypothesis that negative life events would have an adverse effect on self-efficacy and motivation and are contrary to findings in recent literature. The findings lead to the conclusion that life events have no effect on self-efficacy and motivation. The biggest limitation of this study is that only the short-term effects of life events can be measured. Future research should aim to examine the effects of life events on the self-efficacy and motivation of athletes on an individual level. Keywords: life events, self-efficacy, motivation, single-item self report questions, football players
