Abstract
This study aims to explore the perceptions of a sample of 16 Psychology students from the University of Groningen regarding the use of AI-based chatbots in higher education (HE) while considering both students who use such tools (10) and those who do not (6). The research addresses a gap in the current literature by adopting a qualitative research approach. Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis. The analysis resulted in four overarching themes: the perceived inevitability of AI, AI as a tool for efficiency and enhancement, concerns surrounding AI, and the role of the university. Results indicate that, while most students generally perceive AI as inevitable, their views on its benefits and drawbacks differ depending on prior experience. Users emphasized more practical benefits, whereas non-users expressed more concerns, particularly regarding the environmental impact that AI has. Participants also expressed a desire for universities to provide clearer guidance on AI use. These findings offer new insights into student attitudes toward AI in HE and highlight the need for further research and institutional support.
