Abstract
Understanding the perceptions of young adults’ on gender is very pertinent, since gender is one of the most fundamental social categories, and one of the firsts that becomes available in our mind. The aim of this study was to find out which dimensions are more common in young adults’ descriptions of masculinity, femininity and non-binary individuals. It was hypothesised that for masculinity and femininity personality would be the most common dimensions, just like Helgeson (1994) found in her study. However, for non-binary individuals, it was hypothesised that appearance would be the most common dimension. Helgeson’s (1994) study was replicated by also conducting a qualitative study. Thus we also asked participants (N= 98), with ages ranging from 18 to 35, via an online questionnaire to describe one stimulus person (masculine male, feminine male, feminine female, feminine male and non- binary individual) of their choice. And then we conducted a qualitative analysis to inspect participants’ descriptions. We found that appearance was the most common dimension for masculinity (e.g. Muscular and short hair) and femininity (e.g. wears make up and concerned with appearance), but personality was the most common dimension for non-binary individuals (e.g strong convictions and struggles with gender identity). Therefore, we can deduce that the gender norms regarding masculinity and femininity are still closely tied to the physical appearance, perpetuating existing stereotypes. Regarding non-binary individuals, the findings suggest that young adults are aware of the struggles of these individuals.
