Abstract

Research suggests that social connection predicts better well-being and quality of life (QoL) in individuals with psychosis. Thus, interventions designed to improve social connection may enhance these outcomes. However, an overview of such interventions is lacking. This scoping review maps the existing literature on interventions that aim to improve social connection and assess the impact on well-being and QoL in individuals with psychosis. The review followed the JBI and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. PsycInfo was searched in July 2024, yielding 2,561 articles, of which six met the inclusion criteria. Single-case interventions were not included. The six intervention studies were published between 1999 and 2024 and conducted across five Western countries, employing diverse study designs. The findings were conflicting, with two studies finding better outcomes in both social connection and wellbeing or QoL, three reporting better outcomes in social connection only, and one finding worse outcomes for both. The studies also varied in the social connection aspects they targeted and in their approaches to fostering them. Despite the use of a single database, this review highlights the scarcity of intervention studies on this topic and underscores the need for further research. Suggestions for future studies are provided.
