Abstract
This thesis examines how the Scale for Emotional Development (Revised 2) (SEO-R2) shapes and is shaped by sociotechnical imaginaries within the healthcare practice. Although the SEO-R2 – like many diagnostic instruments – is presented as objective and neutral, this research shows that it is part of a wider sociotechnical assemblage where technological means, professional practices and societal views come together. Using a combination of research methods, such as discourse analysis, document research and auto-ethnographic research, it was investigated how something as dynamic and context-dependent as human behaviour is standardised and reduced to a numerical phasing using the SEO-R2. The SEO-R2 uses datafication to make complex emotional development visible, through subjective processes that appeal to the caregiver's intuition and judgment. The results show that the SEO-R2 is more than a diagnostic instrument; it reflects and reinforces certain images of humanity, relations of power, works as a practice-founding tool and confirms normative ideas about the development of a child. Despite the intention to justify the complexity and context, the SEO-R2 creates an apparent objectivity that is paradoxically based on subjective practices. The instrument appears to be constitutive of how the healthcare is organized. The thesis argues for a reflective awareness around the use of diagnostic instruments such as the SEO-R2, in which attention is paid to the underlying assumptions, power relations and co-production of the instrument becomes clear.
