Abstract
Abstract The first years of life are crucial in the child's social-emotional development. Parental sensitivity and the parent-child attachment relationship both play a role in the child's behavioral development. This study examined the relationship between parental sensitivity and the degree of behavioral problems in children. New in this study is that the relationship between sensitivity and behavioral problems was examined through the mediation of the attachment relationship with both mother and father. The hypotheses were examined through a quantitative dataset from the 3HOEK study with 104 families. Parental sensitivity was measured by video observations coded using the Erickson Scales of Sensitivity. The degree of behavioral problems was measured with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire completed by parents about their three-year-old child's problem behavior. The attachment relationship between parent-child was measured using observations and the Attachment Q-Set. Mediation analyses showed a non-significant direct effect between sensitivity and behavioral problems, and a non-significant indirect effect via attachment. However, fathers' sensitivity was significantly positive related to the development of an attachment relationship with the child. In this study, all families had a Dutch background and came from the Rotterdam area. In addition, compared to previous studies, the current study has a smaller sample size (N = 104). In follow-up research, it is therefore recommended to work with larger and more diverse samples to increase reliability and generalizability. Interventions particularly for fathers should be aimed at increasing sensitivity and thus the attachment relationship.
