Abstract
The world population is aging, and the number of single parents is increasing; as a result, grandparents are often called upon to help raise grandchildren. Grandparents play an important role in the well-being of their grandchildren, which is of great value, especially since the well-being of young adults is declining drastically. It is known that intergenerational relationships are enhanced by storytelling, but the exact content of these stories remains unclear. This study focuses on which aspects are passed down from grandparents, with specific attention to stories. This was investigated qualitatively by conducting interviews following an established guideline and analyzing the content of ten interviews using a code tree constructed inductively and deductively. Findings show that grandchildren carry forward the life lesson 'do what you like.' Norms and values such as 'work hard and don't give up' are conveyed both generally and through stories. Particularly, the (family) history concerning the Second World War, poverty, and the life of the grandparent are notably remembered. Further research is needed to form a more detailed picture and incorporate additional aspects, which would enhance reliability and generalizability. Keywords: grandparents, young adults, narratives, passing on, well-being
