Abstract

Many young people with a need for support do not find a job after secondary special education. This study examines the promoting and hindering factors that play a role in achieving success on the labor market for students of cluster 4 education. A distinction is also made between day care, sheltered work and the regular labor market. This is a qualitative study in which 15 interviews were conducted. The main question in this study is: "Which factors do education professionals in secondary special education consider to be promoting and hindering for achieving success in different forms of work and does this differ for day care, sheltered work, and the regular labor market?" The results show that mainly self-reliance, student ambition, internship experiences, availability of workplaces, and guidance and support have a promoting effect. On the other hand, a bad relationship between secondary special education and the labor market, a bad relationship with guidance, an unstable home situation, young age, lack of motivation, unrealistic self-image and certain types of disabilities have a hindering effect. In order to promote success on the labor market, it is recommended to be aware of these factors and to inform all parties about them. For follow-up research, it is recommended to also conduct research at municipality level, because they take over care after secondary special education.
