Abstract
This systematic literature review aimed to gain insight into previous research on teachers’ use of non-verbal communication in kindergarten classrooms and the extent to which this is related to children's language development, synthesizing the findings to provide a cohesive understanding of this topic. Two secondary research questions supported the research question. The first subquestion addressed visual and auditory non-verbal communication, and the second subquestion addressed the non-verbal communication related to physical contact. Nine articles have been included in this study. Most of the included studies explored gestures and signs. The main findings of the studies focused on the improvement in both receptive and expressive vocabulary, as well as children’s ability to recall details from stories and texts. Both auditory and contact codes were barely used in any of the found literature. Due to variations in research designs, small participant groups, limited outcome measures related to language development, and a narrow range of measured forms of non-verbal communication, the findings of this study should be interpreted with caution. Further research is necessary to gain a deeper understanding of the validity and reliability of various studies. Based on this study alone, it can be cautiously concluded that gestures may have a positive impact on specific aspects of children’s language development.
