Abstract
Carl Gustav Jung invented the term “Synchronicity” to describe the phenomenon of meaningful coincidences. This phenomenon as a special human experience is present in psychotherapy. Literature about the work with synchronicity in psychotherapy reveals some information about clinical implications, nonetheless a theoretical framework for practitioners cannot be found in the literature. Two interviews with psychoanalysts were conducted to compare the results of the literature review with the experience of practitioners. While scientific articles try to find theoretical guidelines, the interviews show the emotional perspective of witnessing and experiencing these events. Despite the similarities of the information retrieved from the literature and the interviews, it became obvious that understanding of the subjective experience is fundamental for the work with synchronicity in practice. The inclusion of the subjective experience of practitioners gives information beyond the literature findings, leading to the conclusion that it is worthwhile to engage in comparable investigations and that exclusively theoretical explanations might not capture the entirety of the phenomenon.
