Abstract

This qualitative study investigates how children, parents, and pedagogical staff experience the quality of life, satisfaction, and stability within a Dutch traditional residential youth care setting over a period of 1.5 to 2.5 years. Despite the national policy's focus on home-based youth care, residential care remains necessary for a lot of children with complex needs. The study used retrospective, semi-structured interviews to examine seven children, five parents, and nine staff members. Findings reveal mixed experiences. Although children generally showed improvement in emotional regulation and school performance, there were serious concerns about their emotional well-being, the use of physical restraint during emotional outbursts, and lack of therapeutic continuity. Parents often described communication and transparency from pedagogical staff as insufficient, and youth commonly reported feeling unseen or unsafe. Positive developments were associated with consistent routines, stable relationships with pedagogical staff, and structured and predictable environments. However, systemic challenges—such as understaffing and inadequate resources—limited the effectiveness and quality of care. The study underscores the need for individualized support, improved communication, and greater investment in skilled personnel to enhance outcomes in residential youth care. Recommendations for practice involve providing perspective and positive reinforcement, communicating clearly and addressing the staff shortage. Future research should include larger samples and follow-ups after discharge to assess long-term effects. Using multiple coders and member-checking can improve reliability and reduce researcher bias.
