Abstract
From the age of twelve, students in the Dutch education system are categorized based on their perceived abilities using external differentiation. This early tracking has been critiqued in recent years, with the Dutch Education Council questioning whether it serves the students’ best interests. Within this externally differentiated system, Dutch secondary education distinguishes four main tracks. The biggest of these tracks is vmbo, which in itself subdivides into seven possible pathways. Looking at two of these pathways, this multiple case study has the aim of finding out to what extent the Dutch secondary education system differentiates between vmbo-bk and vmbo-k(g)t. To accomplish this aim, a document analysis was conducted using teaching guides and tests from second year English teaching curriculum Stepping Stones. Twelve chapter tests were coded using Bloom’s revised taxonomy and its knowledge- and cognitive process dimensions. Based on these dimensions, a comparison was made across the two learning paths. Differences between the teaching guides were also included in the comparison. Findings indicate that the extent of differentiation between the two learning paths is minimal. The codes matched for 97.9% of the cognitive processes and 87,5% of the knowledge types. In addition, tests across both pathways share identical structures, subdomains, amount of questions and points per domain. Only the writing tasks showed a slight variation in assessment rubrics. To generalize the results across the entire vmbo track and gain a broader perspective of the differentiation in English assessments, future research could be done to examine all major curriculums across the four years of this track.
