Abstract

Psychological trauma can have a negative effect on youth and can form problems in the learning environment (Robertson et al., 2021). Research is needed to reduce the risk factors of trauma and protective factors play an important role in this. The aim of this study is to investigate which protective factors work the best in reducing the risk factors of trauma for children aged 4 to 8 years. The moderating effect of gender in the relationship between the protective and risk factors was investigated as well. Data (N = 542) originating from research by Leeuwestein et al. (2024) testing the RaPTOSS (Risk factors and Protective factors Trauma Observation School Situations) instrument was used in this research. First a multiple regression analysis was conducted. After an interaction-effect for the significant factors was conducted. Results show that the protective factors Self Image and Self-Regulation were the strongest predictor of low scores on the risk factors of trauma. There was no significant difference for gender in this effect. Concluding, self image and self-regulation work best in reducing the risk factors of trauma. Teachers could play a role in enhancing these features in children and therefore help reduce the risk factors. Further research is needed to investigate whether the same effect is found when using data from children who are actually diagnosed with trauma. Moreover, the effect of gender should be more investigated for the protective factor Safety and Relations. Keywords: protective factors, risk factors, trauma, ACE, education, gender effects
