Abstract
Er zijn grofweg twee visies op Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): de biomedische en de orthopedagogische visie. Vanuit een biomedisch perspectief wordt ADHD beschouwd als een erfelijk hersendefect die leidt tot aandachtsproblemen en hyperactief en impulsief gedrag. Medicatie wordt als beste behandeling beschouwd. Vanuit een orthopedagogisch perspectief wordt ADHD beschouwd als een ongunstig gedragspatroon dat behandeld kan worden met psychosociale en pedagogische interventies. Logischerwijs zouden therapeuten in opleiding geïnformeerd moeten worden over beide visies op ADHD. Deze studie onderzocht een Nederlands psychiatrisch academisch studieboek en een pedagogisch academisch studieboek over ADHD. Zeven biomedische onderwerpen en negen orthopedagogische onderwerpen werden gebruikt in een kwalitatieve inhoudsanalyse. In totaal werden 128 biomedische tekstfragmenten en 112 orthopedagogische tekstfragmenten geïdentificeerd. De biomedische visie was dominant in het psychiatrisch academisch studieboek. In het pedagogisch academisch studieboek kwamen de biomedische en de orthopedagogische visie ongeveer evenveel voor. In beide boeken kwamen ambivalente uitspraken over ADHD voor. De dominantie van de biomedische visie in combinatie met de ambivalentie in beide studieboeken kan leiden tot een vertekend begrip van de ADHD-classificatie bij lezers.
