Abstract
This scoping review aimed to give an overview of the current literature on what is known about affordance perception in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder across different domains of functioning. A search in eight databases (PsychINFO, ERIC, Philosopher’s Index, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, SocIndex, Web of Science Core Collection and MEDLINE) was conducted which yielded 2032 results. After screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, eighteen articles were selected for analysis. Three major themes were identified in the literature; sensory processing, object affordances and social affordances. Studies reported how sensory overstimulation in autistic individuals contributed to a narrowing field of ‘normative’ affordances but gave rise to alternative affordances. Furthermore studies showed impairments in affordance perception with regards to objects and social interactions in autistic people. In both domains autistic individuals seemed to have impairments in their mirror neuron system and affordance system, making it difficult to interact with their environment. The results give a general overview of affordance perception in autistic people. However, future research is suggested to deepen the knowledge by focusing on first-person perspectives and quantitative studies in order to make clinical implications.
