Abstract
Noticing that social inequality is still a significant problem in the Netherlands, despite it being one of the most equal countries in the world, it is important to gain a better understanding of why some people tend to be more supportive towards social policy than others. This study investigates whether individuals in a better social and economic situation are more supportive of social policy, and examines the mediating role of meritocratic beliefs. This was investigated by performing a multiple linear regression analysis on data collected by the LISS panel (N=1636). The findings reveal that individuals in a better social and economic situation tend to be more supportive of social policy. This effect is mediated by meritocratic beliefs.
