Abstract
In today’s increasingly diverse educational landscape, it is important that teachers promote equal opportunities in education. However, mechanisms such as the self-fulfilling prophecy can undermine this equality, emphasizing the need for teachers to critically reflect on their biases and practices. Cognitive flexibility is considered a key component of such critical reflection. This qualitative study explored the extent to which cognitive flexibility is present in the self-reflections of novice teachers and examined the characteristics of diversity that teachers noticed. Ten novice teachers recorded weekly audio diaries over three to four weeks, and critical incidents related to diversity were identified and analyzed. Findings showed that approximately 80% of these critical incidents included indications of cognitive flexibility. Moreover, teachers reflected on various types of diversity, including cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic differences. These results highlight the potential of fostering cognitive flexibility to strengthen inclusive teaching practices. The study underscores the importance of integrating this focus into teacher education and ongoing professional development to promote equal opportunities in diverse classrooms.
