Abstract

While research concerning the relationship between disgust and sex is growing, the studied stimuli remain limited to external stimuli (e.g. saliva and semen). Promising studies indicate that self-disgust, disgust caused by internal stimuli, can have a significant effect on mental and physical health including sexual dysfunction. The current study is a replication and an expansion of Brouwer et al. (2023) aiming to further investigate the relationship between sex and self-disgust. Accordingly, scenarios involving sexual content were used to elicit different types of self-disgust. The different types of self-disgust are pathogen (a feeling of being internally dirty or polluted), sexual (a feeling of having low mating qualities) and moral (a feeling of violating one’s own moral norm). A within-subject design was used on female and male participants (Nwomen = 95, Nmen = 92, Mage = 39.99, SD =13.43) who were presented with the scenarios followed by self-disgust items. Cognition and evaluation items were incorporated to further validate the scenarios. Results indicate a significant relationship between sex-related scenarios and different types of self-disgust. Most of the scenarios were successful in eliciting the corresponding type of self-disgust. Contrary to expectations, no significant difference was found between female and male participants. Taken together, these findings provide a strong empirical basis for further research on self-disgust in sexual contexts within clinical populations.
