Abstract

Recognition of the origin of paintings and other imagery, especially between humans and AI, has the potential to become a prevalent issue. That is why we tried to investigate what effect personal traits, as well as exposure during inductive training, have on correctly identifying between human-made and AI-generated paintings. To sum up the findings of this paper, participants who were exposed to AI images during interleaved inductive training performed better at the origin recognition test. Moreover, the cognitive style of participants moderated the effectiveness of such training, with analytical thinkers deriving greater benefit, which contrasted our original hypothesis about intuitive thinkers having the potential to be more accurate. These findings suggest that deliberate exposure and structured learning can provide individuals with the necessary experience to help navigate an increasingly AI-mediated visual landscape, especially if they tend to engage in analytic perception.
