Abstract

Emotional exhaustion is a central feature of the burden associated with work-related stressors. This study aimed to investigate whether self-reflection is linked to lower emotional exhaustion caused by work-related stressors, and whether this relation is moderated by social support. The study consisted of 84 participants who completed online questionnaires, consisting of a baseline study and a daily diary design of two questionnaire for 10 working days. Participants were randomly assigned to either the self-reflection intervention (n = 28) or one of the control groups (n =56). In the intervention group, participants were prompted to reflect on their work stressors. Results showed no significant effects of self-reflection on emotional exhaustion. The interaction effect of social support was also not significant. However, results showed a significant negative link between social support and emotional exhaustion. Thus, findings suggest the protective role of social support. The self-reflection intervention did not show direct effects, suggesting that present limitations of this study should be investigated in future research, including the duration and the quality of the intervention. Keywords: work stressors, self-reflection, emotional exhaustion, social support, workplace, daily diary intervention, employee well-being
