Abstract

The present study investigated the relationship between burnout and perceived hindrance stressors as well as potential buffering effects of self-reflection. Building on the model of Systematic Self-Reflection and the Job Demands-Resources model, 84 participants initially completed a baseline questionnaire and then received two daily questionnaires for 10 working days. After the baseline questionnaire, which measured the independent variable burnout, participants were randomly assigned to either the self-reflection intervention group (N = 28) or one of the control groups (total N = 56) for the diary part of the study. Participants in the self-reflection group were invited to reflect on their daily stressors via a prompt displayed in the daily surveys. The dependent variable, hindrance stressors, was measured daily as well. Initial levels of burnout were positively correlated with hindrance stressors. The present data failed to support the hypothesized association between self-reflection and hindrance stressors. Further, the study showed no support for a moderating effect of self-reflection on the relationship between burnout and hindrance stressors. In line with contemporary literature, these findings suggest that burnout predicts the perception of hindrance stressors. Research should continue to explore self-reflection interventions for mitigating burnout and job stressors. Keywords: occupational stressors, employee well-being, burnout, hindrance stressors, self-reflection
