Abstract

Due to climate change, ecological instability and natural hazards, disaster-prone regions around the world have been increasingly affected. Children and youth are particularly vulnerable within these contexts, but have seldom been meaningfully involved in recovery or policy actions that concern their future. To challenge this imbalance, Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) has been utilized as a way to engage youth not only as a research object, but as active agents for societal change and knowledge production. Though in current science, there is a lack of overview of working methods, and how to optimize their implementation. Therefore this scoping review about YPAR working methods within the context of disaster-effected areas, aims to provide an overview of the research goals, youth experience, and the extent to which these studies reflect and report about researcher positionality and other methodological limitations. This review drew on systematic methods, conducted via the PRISMA guidelines and used the screening and analysis tools Rayyan and ATLAS. Findings show that roughly five main categories of working forms can be identified; Photovoice and other visual methods, artistic methods, educational methods, technological or digital methods and co-creation or co-design. The majority of studies used a mix of multiple methods, which is why an overview based on differences and similarities between disaster types has been provided. The most frequently deployed working methods were artistic and visual, especially in contexts affected by earthquakes. Findings show that YPAR can be a meaningful way to support youth agency, recovery and policy influencing, but close attention to ethical sensitivity, researcher roles and power dynamics are essential to avoid tokenism.
