Abstract

Hate has been associated with the elimination of its targets, but there is no empirical evidence of this link, which was the aim of the current study. It was hypothesized that stronger hate feelings will lead to more extreme symbolic elimination forms, through progressive devaluation of the target, maintained by an us versus them mindset. This was investigated using a survey with 497 participants including, which was part of a bigger study. A manipulation was used to induce hate feelings, a hate scale to measure hate feelings, and a choice to measure the symbolic elimination form level, ranging from ‘block for myself’ to ‘eliminate from game’. A logistic regression was fitted, which showed that higher hate feelings will indeed lead to more extreme symbolic elimination forms. However, with the majority of participants choosing to do nothing, it was discussed that not enough hate feelings were induced to elicit elimination behaviors. In addition, a personal relationship or familiarity was needed with the target to give rise to hate feelings. Lastly, a distinction between boundary setting as result of dislike and eliminating behaviors as result of hate was distinguished.
