Abstract
Work functions as an important domain of life and might be accompanied by the experience of stress. One way of dealing with stress is through self-reflection. Only limited attention has been given to different factors influencing a possible relation between self reflection on stressors. The objectives of this study were to examine the relationship between self-reflection and hindrance stressors in the work context, with the focus on intrinsic work motivation as a potential moderator. It is proposed that self-reflection is negatively related to hindrance stressors, and that this relation is strengthened by intrinsic work motivation. A daily diary study of 10 working days was conducted, preceded by a base-line study where demographic variables were collected. 84 participants participated in the diary study, of whom 28 were instructed to self-reflect every evening about the difficult demands of the working day. There was a significant difference between the control and self-reflection group. No significant relation was found between self-reflection and hindrance stressors. Additionally, the interaction between self-reflection and intrinsic work motivation on hindrance stressors did not show a significant effect. There was however a significant negative relation between intrinsic work motivation on hindrance stressors. These findings suggest that different limitations of this study should be considered for future research as well as for the implementation of self-reflection as an intervention.
