Abstract
This thesis examines the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and intelligence, with a specific focus on differences in variability across SES groups. Drawing on simulated data modeled after German IDS-2 intelligence test (N= 1613), the study applies Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS) to analyze the variability of intelligence test scores across childhood and adolescence. Results reveal that children from lower backgrounds tend to exhibit lower average IQ scores and significantly higher variability in cognitive performance, in the German sample. In contrast, IQ scores in medium and high SES groups were more homogeneous. Moreover, while SES was associated with effect on overall variance, no interaction effect between SES and age was found, indicating that the developmental pattern of variance is similar across SES categories. These findings highlight that SES influences not only average intelligence but also its variance, with implications for future research.
