Abstract

Individuals vary regarding the level of their sex drive, as multiple factors can influence it. The current study explored some of these factors and it investigated the moderating effect of attachment dimensions on the relationship between the length of a romantic relationship and sex drive. It was hypothesized that there is a negative association between relationship length and sex drive. Additionally, the second hypothesis proposed that this negative link is going to be more pronounced with higher scores on attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance dimensions. This cross-sectional research was conducted using a survey consisting of multiple questionnaires completed by a convenience sample composed of Dutch first-year psychology students at the University of Groningen. The participants were recruited through the SONA platform and the final sample included 76 first-year students. For the purpose of the research question, the Experience in Close Relationship questionnaire (ECR; Brennan, Clark & Shaver, 1998) and the Sex Drive Questionnaire (SDQ; Ostovich & Sabini, 2004) were used, in addition to questions about the participant’s length of a relationship. The first hypothesis was supported, as the results suggest that the longer the romantic relationship is, the lower the sex drive individuals within it experience. No evidence was found of attachment dimensions influencing this relationship, therefore, the second hypothesis was not supported.
