Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the progression of value awareness along academic levels and the influence of value awareness on academic emotions. The research also explored the relationship between the satisfaction of basic psychological needs and academic emotions. In a cross-sectional design, 274 students from different cultural backgrounds took part in a self-report questionnaire that assessed their value awareness levels, the satisfaction of the psychological needs and their levels of positive and negative academic emotions. We proposed that a higher academic level would correlate with greater value awareness (H1). Furthermore, we hypothesised that higher levels of value awareness would lead to higher levels of positive academic emotions and lower levels of negative academic emotions (H2). The investigation of how basic psychological needs relate to academic emotions was purely exploratory. Contrary to our hypothesis, there was no significant difference in value awareness across the five academic levels (H1). However, our findings revealed that value awareness is positively correlated with positive academic emotions and negatively correlated with negative academic emotions (H2). Our exploratory analysis showed that the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs was associated with greater levels of positive academic emotions and lower levels of negative academic emotions. These findings can offer guidance for educators, universities, and academic administrators in implementing strategies that could improve students’ well-being. Keywords: value awareness, academic emotions, basic psychological needs, student well-being, higher education
