Abstract

University students are considered at high risk for mental health issues, highlighting the urgent need for prevention-focused strategies. To support universities in promoting student well-being, we examined the role of value awareness in student development and its relationship with subjective well-being among university students, drawing on Chickering’s theory of student development and self-determination theory. We hypothesized that (1) value awareness would increase with academic level, (2) value awareness would be positively associated with subjective well-being, and (3) the relationship between value awareness and subjective well-being would be mediated by the satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness). To test this, a convenience sample of university students (n = 274) from varying academic levels completed measures of value awareness, needs satisfaction and subjective well-being. Contrary to our expectations, results from a one-way ANOVA indicated no significant differences in value awareness across academic levels, suggesting that its development may not follow a linear trajectory. Correlation analysis showed a moderate positive relationship between value awareness and subjective well-being. Mediation analysis revealed that autonomy and relatedness satisfaction partially mediated this relationship, while competence did not. These findings highlight value awareness as a meaningful contributor to student well-being, operating both directly and through psychological needs. Implications for student development theory and value-based interventions in higher education are discussed. Keywords: academic progression, basic psychological needs satisfaction, subjective well-being, university students, value awareness
