Abstract
This thesis presents the perspective of the German psychiatrist, Wilhelm Lange-Eichbaum, whose contributions to the study of the “genius problem” have been largely overlooked by today's historians of psychology and psychiatry. I examine his differentiated terminology employed in his premier 1928 work, “Genius - Insanity and Eminence, “. Lange-Eichbaum is situated in the academic context of early 20th-century psychiatry and psychology, and his affiliation with the Tübinger school’s multidimensional approach is highlighted. Special attention is given to his theoretical innovations, such as the introduction of “bionegativity” and his methodological approach. Lange-Eichbaum’s pathographic analysis of Jesus is discussed to exemplify the psychiatrist's application of historically grounded psychiatric evaluation as a primary source of evidence. This research also critiques the secondary literature, showing that Lange-Eichbaum’s work has often been misunderstood. By reassessing his contributions, this study argues for his relevance to the discussions on the “genius problem” and biographical research in psychology and psychiatry.
