Abstract

This study explores moral education with a social intuitionist approach, because moral education is often reactive and unconsciously performed by the teacher. Using Moral Foundation Theory and two different moral reasoning frameworks, this study explores Dutch teachers’ morals. A questionnaire with moral foundation vignettes and statements about moral reasoning was distributed. Respondents (n=50) were Dutch teachers. The instruments presented some reliability issues due to the small sample and a few other concerns. The results of this study often aligned with earlier research, but possibly, a few new patterns emerged as well. Mean scores on several moral foundations were higher than expected based on earlier research, and a relation between politics and formalism, and religious upbringing and formalism was found. Further research is desirable to confirm these findings, and so is the development of reliable and valid scales.
