Abstract
Self-disgust is a complex, underexplored emotion that might play a role in sexual (dys)functioning. Because previous research about this topic is quite preliminary, this study investigated whether sex-related scenarios could elicit three distinct types of self disgust (pathogen, sexual and moral), in both male and female participants. It also evaluated whether these scenarios elicited the intended type of self-disgust. A total of 102 (nMale = 54; nFemale = 48) heterosexual, cisgender participants (MAge = 30.52) completed an online scenario-based study. Participants were asked to rate their levels of self-disgust after imagining either themselves (self-perspective) or someone else (other-perspective) in a series of eleven sex-related scenarios, each designed to target one of the three disgust domains. Each participant completed both perspectives. Results demonstrated that self-perspective scenarios consistently elicited higher levels of self-disgust in comparison to other-perspective scenarios. This was the case across all domains. No significant gender differences were observed in the overall levels of self-disgust. It was also found that several scenarios did not fully elicit their intended disgust-domain (e.g. a scenario designed to elicit pathogen self-disgust, elicited sexual self-disgust), suggesting possible conceptual overlap between domains or limitations in wording. These findings indicate that self-disgust can be triggered by imagined sexual experiences. It supports the construct validity of self-disgust in sexual contexts, and suggests that self-disgust may be a relevant target for clinical interventions. However, it also emphasizes the need for possible re-evaluation of the self-disgust model and scenarios.
