Abstract
University students are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. Based on Positive Psychology and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), this study explored the role of value awareness (VA) in relation to well-being during the academic journey. Additionally, the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) provided a framework to examine the role of Basic Psychological Needs (BPN) satisfaction in student well-being. A cross-sectional design was employed, with N = 274 university students completing an online survey. VA was measured using selected items from the Engaged Living Scale (ELS), and BPN satisfaction was measured with the Satisfaction subscale of the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Scale (BPNSS). To adapt well-being to the academic setting, it was conceptualised as positive and negative academic emotions (AE), using selected items from the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire (AEQ). An ANOVA was conducted to examine differences in VA across academic levels, and Pearson’s correlations were used to investigate associations between VA, AE, and BPN satisfaction. Results showed no significant differences in VA between academic years (first year until postgraduate). However, VA was positively correlated with positive AE and BPN satisfaction, and negatively correlated with negative AE. Additionally, positive AE were positively associated with BPN satisfaction, while negative AE showed negative associations. These findings highlight the importance of VA in the context of student well-being and suggest directions for developing interventions in higher educational institutions. Keywords: value awareness, academic emotions, well-being, self-determination theory, students, mental health
